Wearing lipstick with clear aligners and how to prevent smudging

Wearing lipstick with Invisalign requires a barrier approach to prevent pigments from transferring onto the medical-grade thermoplastic. By using matte, long-wear formulas of lipstick and a clear dental wax barrier over your resin attachments, you can prevent polymer adhesion. This ensures your aligners stay invisible while maintaining a polished, professional look. Our team at Enamel Dentistry The Grove in Rosedale, has provided tips to avoid the discoloration of your aligner trays.

Invisalign trays are made from a highly sophisticated, medical-grade thermoplastic. While this material is designed for superior tooth movement, it can attract organic pigments found in lipsticks. At a microscopic level, the plastic is slightly porous. Medical literature supports that directly printed aligners increase in roughness and porosity after a week of intraoral usage [1] (Eslami et al., 2024). When you apply oil-based lip products, the emollients can seep into the pores of the thermoplastic. This is why a simple rinse with water often fails to remove a red smudge from lipstick. For patients in The Grove, understanding polymer adhesion is the first step in protecting your Invisalign investment. Unlike your natural enamel, which can be polished, once a pigment deeply stains the thermoplastic, the tray may remain tinted until your next tray swap.

A primary challenge for makeup lovers is not just the trays but also the composite resin attachments. These small, tooth-colored bumps are essential for tooth movement; however, they have a higher surface roughness compared to  natural enamel. In our clinical case studies at Enamel Dentistry, we have observed that these attachments act as physical anchors for lipstick. Since the resin is more porous than enamel, the resin can absorb dyes from lipsticks. If red color gets trapped between the edge of the attachment and the Invisalign tray, it creates a staining effect. Clinical evidence suggests that polyurethane is susceptible to pigments and color instability [2] (Kobkiatkawin et al., 2024). To prevent this, we recommend applying a tiny amount of clear, petroleum-free lip balm over the attachment before inserting your trays. This creates a barrier that prevents the pigment from attaching to the resin.

Not all lip products are created equal when wearing clear aligners. If you are heading to a networking event at The Grove or a photo op on 45th Street, your formula choice is your best defense.

  • Matte Liquid Lipsticks: Once they set, they become transfer-resistant. They lack the free-moving oils that cause smudging on the thermoplastic.
  • Lip Stains: These absorb directly into the skin of your lips. This makes them safe for Invisalign users, as there is no physical product to rub off on the trays.
  • Avoid Glosses: These stay wet and can migrate onto the edges of your aligners, leading to a pink look.

Accidents happen, especially when you are enjoying a night out in Rosedale. If you notice a lipstick smudge on your trays while you are away from your 42,000 Hz ultrasonic cleaner, do not panic.

The most effective emergency tool to clean the aligner is an alcohol-free foam. We recommend our patients carry a travel-sized bottle in their bag. Apply a small amount to a Q-tip and gently dab the spot. Avoid using colored hand soaps from restaurant bathrooms, as the dyes in the soap can tint the plastic. If the smudge is on the inside of the tray, rinse with bottled water immediately to prevent the pigment from being pressed against your attachments.

While you change your Invisalign trays every 1–2 weeks, your composite attachments stay on for the duration of your treatment. Repeatedly using oil-based lipsticks can lead to a cumulative staining effect on the resin. To maintain a white smile throughout your treatment, being consistent is key. After a night of wearing makeup, ensure you give your trays a deep clean using Invisalign Cleaning Crystals. Clinical literature supports that a combination of mechanical and chemical methods is the most effective approach to cleaning clear aligners [3] (Charavet et al., 2022). This chemical oxidation process is specifically designed to break down the bonds of makeup pigments without scratching the thermoplastic. By removing these residues daily, you ensure that your attachments do not turn yellow, keeping your treatment truly invisible.

1. How do I remove lipstick from my trays if I am out and about?

Carry a travel-sized, alcohol-free cleaning foam. If you notice a smudge while at a restaurant in The Grove, use a damp Q-tip with a little foam to gently lift the pigment. Avoid using napkins, which can scratch the plastic and make future staining worse.

2. Can makeup remover be used on my Invisalign trays?

No. Most makeup removers contain oils or chemicals that can degrade the polymer or leave a chemical taste. Stick to pH-neutral soap or specialized Invisalign cleaning crystals.

3. Will bold lipstick make my attachments more visible?

Darker colors of red can actually highlight the shadows around your attachments. If you are self-conscious, stick to mattes, which blend better with the natural shadows of the aligners.
