Why dental cleanings matter

Prevention is also the simplest, least invasive dentistry there is. We’d rather catch the small thing early than fix the big thing later.

A dental cleaning is the cheapest dentistry you’ll ever buy.

Here’s the part nobody tells you when you move: your old dentist’s watchful eye didn’t move with you. Plaque doesn’t care that you’ve been busy settling in. It hardens into tartar. Tartar feeds gum disease. Two skipped years quietly become a filling. Or three.

A professional cleaning clears what brushing and flossing can’t reach. And it’s not just teeth. Gum disease has been linked to heart disease and diabetes, among other systemic conditions. Getting re-established with a dentist might be the best health move you make this year. Cheaper than your gym membership, too. Pregnant patients have extra reason to stay on schedule, since gingivitis and pregnancy are closely linked.

What happens at a cleaning

Your first teeth cleaning here, start to finish.

Comfortable and efficient, about an hour for a recall visit. Your first one runs closer to 90 minutes.

01

Check-in & digital imaging

A friendly hello and a few questions about your history. You’re new, so we take a full set of digital X-rays and start your chart. No clipboards if we can help it.

02

Plaque & tartar removal

Your hygienist works above and below the gumline with ultrasonic and hand instruments. Everything brushing missed gets cleared out, however long it’s been sitting there.

03

Polish & oral health exam

Surface stains come off. Then the dentist checks for early decay and gum inflammation, plus anything worth keeping an eye on.

What we actually look at

Eight things we check at every teeth cleaning.

A cleaning is more than the polish. Here’s what your dentist and hygienist actually run through while you’re in the chair.

New patient 90 min · Recall 60 min

Book online or call (512) 649-7510 for a same-week appointment.

01Plaque & tartar

Comes off first, above and below the gumline, with ultrasonic and hand scaling.

02Cavities & decay

A visual check plus digital X-rays hunting for soft spots. Your first-visit set becomes the baseline we compare against for years.

03Gum health

Measured pocket by pocket, so small changes show up before they turn into problems.

04Bite & wear

Tells us if you grind or clench. You'd be surprised how many people find out right here in the chair.

05Old restorations

Fillings and crowns from your old dentist get a fresh set of eyes, since restorations can fail quietly.

06Oral cancer

Five minutes. Lips, tongue, throat, neck. Included at every visit, and the part patients thank us for later.

07Stain & polish

Surface stains come off near the end. The coffee, the East Side happy hours.

08Home routine

A quick word about your home routine before you go. No judgment, ever.

Each item is part of a standard comprehensive exam at Enamel. Book online or call (512) 649-7510 for a same-week appointment.

How often

How often do you actually need a teeth cleaning?

Every six months works for most people. Some mouths need more. Maybe you’ve had gum disease before. Maybe buildup forms fast, or it’s been years since anyone looked. No shame, that’s half the East Side. We might start with shorter gaps and stretch them back out once your gums calm down.

Better to stay ahead of trouble than chase it. After visit one, your hygienist will tell you which kind of mouth you’ve got. Straight answer, no hedging.

What you eat matters too. Here is a quick guide to eating for healthier gums.

What makes Enamel different

A gentle teeth cleaning, not a guilt trip.

We combine modern technology, experienced providers, and a prevention-first philosophy to deliver exceptional care, every cleaning tailored to your specific oral health needs. And if arthritis or limited mobility makes brushing tough, our guide to brushing with arthritis walks through techniques that help.

Prevention first.

Catch the small thing early, skip the big fix later. Every cleaning includes a real exam, so the next visit never opens with a surprise.

Early detectionRoutine X-rays

Modern tech, gentle touch.

We’ll turn the intraoral camera around so you can see the worn filling we’re describing instead of taking our word for it. The ultrasonic scaler gets through stubborn buildup faster than hand tools alone, and it’s easier on your gums while it does it.

Digital imagingUltrasonic

Education, not upsell.

You’ll hear what we found in plain English and what we’d do about it if it were our mouth. The decision is still yours. If you skipped a few years, that part never comes up unless you bring it up.

Extra protection, when it makes sense

Does a teeth cleaning include fluoride or sealants?

Yes, when there’s a reason for it. Neither one is a default add-on at checkout. They earn their spot on your chart by lowering your cavity risk.

FluorideFor kids and adults

Fluoride: not just for kids.

A move scrambles your routines more than you would think, and the coffee habit that came with the new job does not help. If your cavity risk has crept up, a fluoride treatment at the end of the cleaning hardens your enamel against acid. Takes about a minute and you will not feel a thing.

  • Strengthens enamel against acid attacks
  • Quick, painless, applied at the end of your cleaning
  • Recommended when cavity risk is elevated
SealantsFor decay-prone molars

Dental sealants. A thin shield for tricky grooves.

Molars have deep pits that trap what brushing cannot reach. A sealant simply closes them off. We suggest them for adults who keep getting decay in the same spots.

  • Seals the deep pits on chewing surfaces
  • Lasts for years with normal wear
  • Often covered by insurance for kids

Wherever you are on the East Side

Teeth cleaning near Plaza Saltillo

Our East 5th studio covers most of the near East Side. East Cesar Chavez and Holly are a short walk, Govalle and Cherrywood a few minutes up the road. We see plenty of Rainey Street and downtown folks too, since the studio sits one block off the Plaza Saltillo Red Line platform and a lot of patients come straight off the train.

Most patients here live in 78702, but plenty don't. Downtown 78701 is one train stop away, Cherrywood's corner of 78722 is five minutes by car, and the Govalle side of 78721 is about the same.

Frequently asked

Teeth cleaning questions, East Side edition.

Don’t see yours? Call us. We’d rather chat than have you guess.

I haven't seen a dentist since I moved to Austin. Is my first visit going to be awkward?

Not even slightly. Half our new patients open with that exact confession. The first visit runs 90 minutes. We build your chart and take X-rays. You get cleaned. The dentist does a proper exam. You leave caught up, not chewed out.

Do I need new X-rays if my old dentist took some last year?

Maybe not. Ask your old office to send them over before your visit. If they are recent and readable, we work from those. If not, ours are digital and quick.

Where do I park near the studio?

You might not need to. We are a block off the Plaza Saltillo Red Line platform, so plenty of patients walk or ride in. Driving? Easy pull off IH-35 or East Cesar Chavez.

How long does a teeth cleaning take?

Returning patients are in and out in about an hour, exam included. First visits run closer to 90 minutes. Building a chart and shooting a full set of X-rays takes time worth taking.

Is a cleaning covered by insurance?

Most PPO plans cover two per year. We check your benefits before the visit and handle the billing ourselves. No insurance? There is flat self-pay pricing, plus the Enamel Dental Plan.
