To understand how to best clean your teeth, we must first understand what is causing them to be stained. Coffee, tea, and tobacco contain chromogens, which are dark-colored pigments that latch onto the pores of your enamel. Stains fall into two categories: extrinsic or intrinsic stains. Extrinsic stains are located on the outer layer of the tooth and/or the pellicle. These can be easily removed with abrasives such as toothpaste. In contrast, intrinsic stains are an accumulation of dark pigment deep inside the enamel. Over time, tobacco tar and coffee often penetrate deep into the enamel. As a result, the intrinsic stains can only be corrected with professional intervention. Extrinsic stains and or the “fuzz” that you can feel on your teeth can be removed with brushing. Intrinsic stains must be lifted with chemical agents. OTC strips also have hydrogen peroxide, but not in a high enough concentration to correct the intrinsic stains.
