A pediatric visit isn’t a smaller version of an adult cleaning. With kids, most of the appointment is about whether your child decides the dentist is a safe place, and that first impression tends to stick.

There’s a real reason a lot of kids in this part of North Austin haven’t seen a dentist yet, and it usually isn’t that parents don’t care. The opposite. Money’s tight, the schedule’s tighter, and a lot of households here work shifts. Parents clock in at Dell off Parmer, at Samsung’s plant, at Applied Materials and 3M, and a dentist visit means either burning a half-day of pay or squeezing it into the only free morning all week. Add a clinic where nobody at the front desk speaks Spanish, where you sign a form you’re not sure about and then get handed a bill you weren’t expecting, and it’s easy to understand why the kids’ dentist keeps getting pushed to next month. And the month after that.
We built this differently, on purpose. Our studio sits right off East Parmer Lane near the I-35 interchange, close to Tech Ridge and the Walnut Creek neighborhoods, so you’re not driving across town. Most kids’ preventive care, the cleaning, the exam, the x-rays, is covered at 100% by dental insurance. A first visit often costs you nothing. The problem has never been that the care is expensive. It’s that nobody checked, nobody explained, and the surprise at checkout taught a whole generation of parents to stay away.
So we check first. Before you come in, we verify exactly what your plan covers and tell you the number up front. If your kids don’t have dental insurance, that’s common around here too, and there’s a plan for it. You get to hand them a clean start. For a parent who maybe didn’t get one, that’s worth a lot, and it begins with a single easy visit.
Because families here often bring in a few kids at once, and sometimes for the first time, the visit looks a little different at each age. For a baby or toddler, we count the teeth that have come in, check the gums, and talk through teething and the bottle. The bottle or sippy cup full of milk or juice that goes to bed with them is the single biggest cause of early cavities in little ones, and it’s very fixable once you know.
For school-age kids, the new back molars come in around age 6 and again near 12, and those deep grooves trap decay. That’s where sealants help, a quick painless coating we paint on to seal them off. We also watch for the chalky white or brown spots that mean a cavity is starting. Those are painless at first, which is exactly why they get missed at home for months.
For pre-teens and teens, we start tracking jaw growth and crowding around age 7, which is when the orthodontists say to take a first look. We talk mouthguards for sports and keep an eye on the wisdom teeth as they show up later.

When a baby tooth does get a cavity, we do the smallest fix that works. A small one gets a tooth-colored filling. A bigger one on a back baby tooth may get a stainless steel crown, which holds the tooth and protects the space until it falls out on its own. If decay reaches the nerve, a pulpotomy clears the infected part so the tooth can come out on schedule. If a tooth is lost too early, a space maintainer keeps room for the adult tooth. For anything that needs deeper sedation or more involved work, we’ll refer you to a trusted pediatric specialist and stay looped in. And whatever the plan is, we’ll tell you the cost before we start, in the language you’re most comfortable with.

A first visit runs about thirty minutes and doesn’t feel rushed. For a baby or young toddler, we do a knee-to-knee look, where you hold your child facing you so your face is what they see the whole time. For an older kid, it’s a gentle exam, a cleaning if today’s the day, fluoride, and sealants if the new molars are in. We name each tool and count the teeth out loud so nothing’s a mystery. Then a short, honest talk with you at the end.
Kid meets the chair, the light, the “tooth counter,” and the suction (we let them hold it). Nothing in the mouth until they are ready and they know what is coming.
Counts, photos, and a feel-around. We talk through what we see out loud, so your child hears the same words you do. Parent stays right there.
For very young kids, a soft tooth-brush polish. For older kids, the full polish, floss, and fluoride. If today is not the day, we say so and re-book.

From the first cleaning to the rare restorative visit, the order is the same: do the least invasive thing that solves the problem, and protect the road for the adult teeth coming next.
A clean, a polish, fluoride if needed, and a friendly chat. Restorative care is the exception, not the destination, and almost always smaller when we catch it early.

PreventiveFix damaged baby teeth. Stainless steel crowns will keep damaged teeth intact until they fall out naturally, preserving the bite, the spacing, and the chewing surface until the adult tooth is ready to take over.
RestorativeRemove the source of infection. Leaving an infected baby tooth could result in premature tooth loss and poor oral development. A pulpotomy or, when needed, a careful extraction is the conservative choice, done with sedation if it helps.
Pulpotomy / extractionKeep teeth where they should be. If a baby tooth is prematurely lost, space maintainers can help other teeth from shifting, protecting the room the adult tooth needs to come in straight, and saving orthodontic work down the line.
