Tobacco is responsible for the large majority of oral cancer cases, and that includes smokeless tobacco, the chew and dip kind, which gets underestimated because it doesn’t go in your lungs. Chew is common in construction, landscaping, and at manufacturing plants like the ones along the Dell Parmer and Samsung corridor. A lot of users have been dipping for years without anyone ever explaining that smokeless tobacco has a direct link to cancers of the gum and cheek tissue, specifically in the spot where the tobacco sits, and that’s a connection most people in this community haven’t heard.
Add cigarettes and the picture changes more. Someone who smokes a few cigarettes a day doesn’t usually think of themselves as a tobacco user. The research doesn’t make a distinction. “Any current tobacco use” is how the risk category works, because there’s no clean threshold below which exposure stops adding up.
Combine tobacco with even moderate drinking and the risk picture gets a lot worse than either one alone. The combination is more like multiplication than addition, and that’s not widely understood.
Access matters too. When dental care has been sporadic and a year goes by, then two, the soft tissue exam that catches things early doesn’t happen during that gap. This exam is already included in the cleaning you’re booking here, with no separate appointment, no extra cost, and no referral needed.

Most PPO plans cover preventive cleanings twice a year, and the oral cancer screening is part of that visit. If you’re insured and you’re coming in for cleanings, the screening is already covered. If you’re not insured, it’s still part of the flat cleaning rate.

We walk you through it clearly, in whichever language works best for you, and explain what comes next. Sometimes that’s a two-week recheck here. If the finding warrants it, it’s a referral to an oral surgeon. Either way, you leave with a clear answer.
