How vaping affects your Invisalign Trays

Vaping with Invisalign is a habit that risks compromising the physical fit and clarity of your trays. Invisalign trays are made of medical-grade thermoplastic that can warp when exposed to the consistent heat of vapor, potentially altering the orthodontic pressure and extending your total treatment timeline. At Enamel Dentistry Leander near Crystal Falls, we want you to finish Invisalign treatment with a smile that is as bright as when you started.

Vaping and the effects it has on Invisalign

Invisalign trays are manufactured from a specialized thermoplastic called SmartTrack. This material is prized for its elasticity, but it has a specific temperature at which the plastic becomes pliable and loses its engineered shape. While the vapor from an e-cigarette is cool when compared to a flame, the internal heating element of a vape pen often reaches high temperatures. When you inhale the concentrated heat frequently, the trays can undergo micro-warping. Even a microscopic shift in the tray’s geometry means the pressure is no longer hitting the tooth at the precise angle planned by our dentists. In Leander, we often see this lead to non-tracking errors, which can add time to your treatment time.

Medical research indicates that e-cigarette usage may cause the development of oral diseases, including teeth discoloration and dental caries [1] (Cichonska et al., 2024).  Despite this, many patients believe that because they use clear vape liquid, their trays are safe from discoloration. However, the chemistry of vaping relies on vegetable glycerin and propylene glycol, two highly viscous substances. As you vape, a microscopic, sticky film of these oils can coat your aligners. This film acts as a biological adhesive. If you grab a coffee at Red Horn Coffee & Brewing or enjoy a meal in Crystal Falls without a deep cleaning of your trays, the pigments from those foods bond to vape residue. Unlike surface stains on a natural tooth, these pigments become encapsulated within the polymer of the tray, making the aligner look cloudy.

Nicotine itself is a colorless liquid that turns yellow when undergoing oxidation. When nicotine vapor is trapped between the aligner and your tooth, it forms a low-oxygen, high-moisture environment. The nicotine molecules penetrate the porous surface of the plastic. As you go about your day in the Texas sun, the nicotine inside the plastic can oxidize, creating a yellow tint. Despite  changing  trays every 7–14 days, oxidation can still  stain the composite resin attachments that remain on during the entire treatment. In fact, clinical research indicates significant detrimental associations between smoking and orthodontic appliances [2] (Alam et al., 2024).

Below is a table that compares the effects of smoking, coffee, and vaping on aligner integrity

Vaping is clinically linked to nocturnal xerostomia (dry mouth). Medical literature supports that the presence of xerostomia is high in healthy smoking populations [3] (Guo et al., 2023). Saliva is your mouth’s natural defense, neutralizing the acids that are produced by plaque bacteria. When vaping, the chemicals reduce saliva flow and leave your mouth dry. Because Invisalign trays fit tightly against the teeth, they prevent whatever little saliva you do have from reaching the enamel. If you vape with your trays in, the sugars and flavorings from the e-liquid become trapped against your teeth. Without saliva to remove the sugars, this creates a localized acid bath. This can significantly increase the risk of white spot lesions, which are permanent marks of demineralization that appear on your teeth once the trays are removed.

From a financial perspective, vaping with Invisalign can turn a fixed-cost treatment into an expensive one. Most Invisalign plans in Leander include a specific number of refinements. If your trays warp due to heat or your attachments become too stained to hold the tray’s grip, you may require a rescan.  This often involves:

  • Replacement Costs: Ordering new sets of trays to replace warped ones.
  • Time Loss: Waiting weeks for the new trays to arrive from the lab.
  • Opportunity Cost: An extra 4 months in aligners can mean still wearing trays during a wedding or graduation.

At Enamel Dentistry Leander, we offer Sunbit and Cherry to help manage the investment, but the best way to save money is to protect the integrity of your initial set of trays by removing them before you vape.

1. Can I vape while wearing my Invisalign trays?

This is not recommended. Vaping can compromise the fit of the aligners and lead to discoloration. This heat and chemicals can interfere with the forces needed to move the teeth.

2. Will the heat from vaping melt my Invisalign trays?

While this will not melt them, it can cause micro-warping. Invisalign trays are made of thermoplastic that becomes pliable at high temperatures.

3. If my vape liquid is clear, can my aligners become stained?

Yes. E-liquid contains glycerin, which is a viscous substance. They can create a film on the trays that act as an adhesive. This can result in a cloudy appearance.
