How the iTero 5D Scanner functions

The iTero 5D scanner is a radiation-free digital imaging system that uses optical laser technology to create a high-resolution map of your teeth. This advanced tool eliminates putty impressions, detects hidden cavities using Near-Infrared Imaging (NIRI), and provides real-time Invisalign outcome simulations for patients in The Grove. Medical literature supports that iTero Element 5D  has significant benefits for the detection and monitoring of caries lesions [1] (British D et al., 2021). Enamel Dentistry, the Grove in Rosedale, uses modern dental technology to make the process of Invisalign more comfortable and efficient.

How intraoral scanners work

Traditional impressions require you to sit still for several minutes with a mouth full of impression material. For many, this triggers a severe gag reflex and physical discomfort. Clinical research indicates that intraoral scanners can be considered an alternative to the conventional impressions for orthodontic treatment planning [2] (Janosi et al., 2023). The iTero 5D functions by using a small camera that glides over your teeth. Because the scan is digital, our team can pause at any time if you need to swallow or take a breath. There is no mess, no bad taste, and no distorted molds. For our neighbors in Rosedale who value a stress-free experience, this technology makes the first step of Invisalign easy.

The “5D” in the iTero 5D stands for its ability to see what the human eye cannot. This is the first 3D intraoral scanner with Near-Infrared Imaging (NIRI) technology. This functions by scanning the internal structure of your teeth in real-time. As the wand is moved, the scanner looks through the enamel to detect decay. Clinical evidence indicates that NIRI can be used with moderate reliability, high specificity, and moderate sensitivity to detect noncavitated interproximal carious lesions [3] (Hoxie et al., 2024). This is a major modern breakthrough because we are allowed to monitor your health without additional radiation from X-rays. iTero 5D is a comprehensive health screening that happens simultaneously with your Invisalign records.

One of the biggest hurdles for our patients is wondering if Invisalign is worth it. The iTero 5D removes the guesswork. Once the scan is complete, the software generates an Invisalign Outcome Simulator. This tool shows a side-by-side 3D comparison of your current teeth and what they will look like after treatment. You can see exactly how the crowded or gapped teeth will shift into alignment. This visualization ensures you and our dentist are on the same page before a single aligner is even printed.

The secret to Invisalign’s success is the medical-grade material; however,  that material is only as good as the data that is provided. The iTero 5D captures 6,000 frames per second, creating a highly detailed copy of your mouth. Traditional putty can shrink, expand, or develop air bubbles, leading to aligners that pinch your gums or do not seat correctly. The 5D’s laser precision ensures that your aligners are trimmed to your exact gum line. This data density means fewer corrections and a faster path to your final result. Even a 0.5mm discrepancy in a putty impression can lead to aligner lag, where the tooth does not move into the tray’s position. Digital scans do not shrink or warp. By using laser-based mapping, we bypass the human error of traditional impressions, resulting in a perfect fit on day one that transitions into movement without the painful pinching caused by distorted molds.

For the busy professional working near 45th Street, time is the ultimate luxury. In the past, physical molds had to be boxed up and shipped to a lab, adding time to your start date. The iTero 5D functions on a cloud-based system. The moment we finish your scan at our office in The Grove, the 3D file is sent instantly to the Invisalign technicians. This digital workflow can save up to 10 days off your total wait time, getting your first set of trays into your hands much faster.

1. Does the iTero 5D scan cause pain?

No. The wand never actually touches your teeth with any pressure. The wand simply hovers and glides over the surfaces. This is a painless and non-invasive procedure.

2. Can digital scans be performed if I have crowns or veneers?

Yes. The iTero 5D is designed to scan around existing dental work, including crowns, bridges, and permanent retainers, with extreme accuracy.

3. How often will I need to be scanned during Invisalign?

Most patients only need one primary scan at the start. However, if your teeth are not  “tracking” (moving) as planned, we may do a quick “progress scan” to get you back on track.
