Why dental cleanings matter

A dental cleaning is also an exam. At least it should be.

Here’s a quiet truth about dentistry: the cleaning is where everything else gets caught. Almost nobody books an appointment for “early gum inflammation” or “a crown that’s starting to leak.” Those problems get found, or missed, during routine visits.

That’s why we treat the exam half of the appointment as seriously as the scaling half. Plaque and tartar come off, of course. Brushing can’t touch tartar once it’s formed, so that part is non-negotiable. But the bigger value over ten or twenty years is the pattern of someone qualified looking at the same mouth twice a year and noticing what changed.

Your gums earn the attention. Gum disease has been linked to heart disease and diabetes among other systemic conditions, and it’s far easier to manage when it’s caught as gingivitis.

Your first visit runs about 90 minutes so we can set up your chart, take a full set of X-rays, and do a thorough exam. Every return cleaning after that is a comfortable 60 minutes, start to finish.

How often

How often do adults need a dental exam and cleaning?

Most adults do fine coming in every six months. Tartar needs time to build, and half a year is short enough to interrupt it without turning the dentist into a part-time job.

Some charts argue for more. A history of gum disease, fast-forming buildup, certain medications, a mouth full of older dental work that deserves closer watching. In those cases we’ll suggest three or four visits a year and explain the reasoning, not just the schedule.

Plenty of our fluoride patients are in their forties and fifties. Enamel doesn’t grow back. Gums also pull back a little as the years stack up, and the root surfaces they uncover decay faster than the rest of the tooth. So when a chart shows recession or a string of new cavities, fluoride goes on right after the cleaning. Adds a minute, maybe two.

Deep molar pits trap plaque no brush can clear. Sealing them off is a small, boring procedure that prevents expensive, interesting ones. We recommend them for adults whose decay keeps returning to the same teeth.

Who comes to The Grove for a dental cleaning.

Mostly the neighborhoods you’d guess. Rosedale and Allandale are minutes away, Bryker Woods barely further, and Tarrytown comes across 35th Street. Brentwood and Crestview filter down from the north side. Our home ZIP is 78731, with most of the rest of the chart split between 78756 and 78757, plus a steady Hyde Park contingent out of 78751.

The other big group is healthcare workers. Ascension Seton is the anchor employer next door, and the 38th Street medical district is a five-minute drive, so we see a lot of scrubs between shifts. I’ve had the same crowns for fifteen years. Do they actually need checking?

Fifteen years is the moment to start checking them more closely, not less. A crown that age has earned some scrutiny. When restorations give out, the trouble usually starts underneath, where you won’t feel anything until it’s well along. So we look at every filling and crown at every visit. Most of the time the answer is “still solid,” and that’s a good appointment.

My dentist of twenty years just retired. How do I switch over?

We hear this one a lot lately. Have their office send your records and X-rays to us, or sign a release and we’ll request them. Your first visit here runs 90 minutes so the new chart starts complete, and your history comes along instead of getting lost in the move.

What does the oral cancer screening actually involve?

About five minutes of looking and feeling. The dentist examines your lips, tongue, and the floor and roof of your mouth, then checks your throat and neck for anything that shouldn’t be there. No instruments beyond gloved hands and a light. It’s included in every cleaning because finding these things early matters enormously.

Do I really need X-rays every visit?

No, and we don’t take them every visit. Routine bitewings happen about once a year for most adults, more often only if something specific needs tracking. Each new set gets compared against your older images, so small changes show up.

Is parking at The Grove a pain?

It’s honestly the easy part. The development has its own parking, the studio is a short walk from where you’ll land, and you’re back on MoPac in minutes. Central Austin convenience without the downtown rates.
