Central Austin’s demographics don’t fit the classic “heavy smoker” oral cancer patient profile that most people picture. Allandale, Rosedale, and Tarrytown skew toward educated professionals in their late 30s through 50s who drink moderate amounts of alcohol, may have been vaccinated against HPV after it became widely available but weren’t part of that first wave, and have a chronic low-grade stress level that keeps them running from one thing to the next without necessarily staying current on every health metric.
Alcohol remains one of the top three risk factors for oral cancer, and “moderate” drinking in a social and professional culture is still alcohol exposure. The synergy between alcohol and tobacco use multiplies risk significantly, and some percentage of settled Central Austin professionals smoke socially without thinking of themselves as smokers.

You do, for two reasons. Oropharyngeal cancers driven by HPV have risen significantly in 35-to-65 non-smokers, so “I don’t smoke” doesn’t actually exclude you from the risk pool. Moderate alcohol is its own documented risk factor independent of tobacco. On top of that, the screening builds a documented baseline that makes any future change easy to catch.
Depends what they covered. A complete screening includes the lateral tongue borders, the floor of mouth, and cervical lymph node palpation. A lot of offices skip the neck exam entirely. If those surfaces weren’t specifically checked, the protocol was shorter than the full version. Here the exam runs the complete circuit each time.
We’re a general dental practice, not a referral center for head and neck oncology. That said, if you have patients who need a dentist and live in Central Austin, this studio runs a systematic soft tissue exam at every cleaning visit.
