Pregnancy doesn’t cause gum disease. But the hormonal changes that come with it make your gums significantly more reactive to the bacteria already in your mouth, so gum disease that was minor before can become something that actually needs attention during or after. Yes, for most standard treatment. Scaling and root planing during the second trimester is considered safe. Your OB, your dentist, and the major obstetric guidelines all land in the same place on this. Untreated active gum disease has its own set of risks during pregnancy. If you want us to loop in your OB, we can do that.
Yes. Bleeding that persisted past delivery usually means the underlying gum disease was not treated during pregnancy and progressed. Pregnancy gingivitis is common and reversible, but when it is not caught and treated, it tends to stay and advance. A pocket measurement tells you whether this is still gingivitis or has moved further. One appointment to find out.
