Ambiguity is fine at stand-up. Not at the dentist. If your gums have been bleeding or you’ve been putting off a perio evaluation because you weren’t sure what it would involve, the short answer is: one appointment. We measure every pocket in millimetres, look at bone levels on digital X-rays, tell you exactly where on the disease spectrum you sit, and put a written plan in your hands before you leave.

The problem with gum disease is that it doesn’t give you a lot of warning before the warning stops. Bleeding gums, some sensitivity, occasionally a taste you can’t place. These are early signals. They are also very easy to attribute to brushing too hard or not flossing enough and then file away. Meanwhile, the bacteria below the gumline are doing the work whether you’re thinking about them or not.
Gingivitis, the early stage, is completely reversible. A professional cleaning and a better home routine clears it. Once it advances to periodontitis, where the gum tissue is separating from the tooth and pockets are forming, you’re managing a chronic condition rather than clearing an acute one. The bone loss that happens at moderate and advanced stages does not reverse on its own.

There is also the systemic layer: people with active gum disease carry a 2 to 3 times higher risk of heart attack and stroke. Healthy pockets read at three millimetres or less. We measure every tooth, every visit, so we can spot the half-millimetre that matters before it becomes the four that does not heal on its own.

Diode laser deep cleanings. Used alongside scaling and root planing for better pocket reduction and faster healing. The data on combined SRP-plus-laser outcomes is better than SRP alone. We use both.
Measured every visit. We re-probe every tooth at every maintenance appointment. If a pocket has closed, the number shows it. If it hasn’t, the number shows that too. Progress is in the data, not in how your gums feel to you that day.

It usually means pocket depths are in the borderline range and the provider is watching for progression. The more useful thing is to actually chart the numbers, compare them visit to visit, and make a decision based on whether they’re getting worse. If you’d like to know your actual numbers rather than just “keep watching,” we’ll give them to you at the evaluation.
First perio evaluation: allow about 45 minutes to an hour. That covers the full pocket charting, X-rays, diagnosis, and initial plan discussion. If treatment is needed, scaling and root planing is usually scheduled as a follow-up, by quadrant, in 45 to 60 minute blocks. We work to the calendar.
It can. Bruxism doesn’t directly cause periodontal disease, but it creates mechanical forces that stress the ligaments and bone supporting your teeth, which can accelerate damage in areas where gum disease is already active. If we see wear patterns that suggest grinding, we factor it into the treatment plan.
It depends on your insurance plan and how many quadrants need treatment. Most PPO plans cover scaling and root planing at a meaningful benefit level. We verify your specific coverage before the appointment so you have the number in advance.
It progresses. Gingivitis becomes periodontitis. Pockets deepen, bone is lost, and eventually teeth can loosen or shift. None of that happens quickly, which is why it gets ignored, but none of it reverses on its own either. The earlier the intervention, the simpler the fix.
